Cavity Wall Insulation
If your home was built in the 1930s or after, most likely it’s got cavity walls. Unless it was built within the last 30 years, those cavities are probably empty. So now you know why your home is so cold you can thank us later. If this sounds like your home, insulating your walls could be a very cost-effective way to retain heat in your home and reduce your energy bills thus saving you money.
One of the ways heat is lost in most properties, is through uninsulated walls. Uninsulated walls account for up to one third of heat loss in most properties. It’s estimated on average that cavity wall insulation could save you £160.00 per year.
Do I have a cavity wall?
The easiest way to tell if you have a cavity wall is to look at the brickwork pattern of your home. A cavity wall has a long-bricked theme all around the building what is known as the stretcher pattern as you can see in the picture below on the right. Were as a solid wall have what’s known as the header and stretcher themed brick pattern as you can see below in the picture on the left.
what if my house is timber-framed?
If your home is timber-framed it may look exactly as though it’s built of brick. Although it looks like this, this is not the case at all. Timber framed homes are not suitable for cavity wall insulation, as they have no cavity to allow moisture to escape.
To find out whether or not your home is timber framed, if you’re not sure, you can check up in your loft space. What you are looking for is your party or gable wall. If they are made from timber and not of brick, your house is definitely timber-framed.
What if my home has been rendered or cladded?
If your home has been rendered or cladded you may be able to tell if you have cavity walls by the remaining brickwork pattern that could be showing as discussed above. If all the brickwork in your home has been rendered or cladded which means you can’t see any actual bricks, you can measure the thickness of the wall. For a cavity wall to be valid to have insulation installed. It should have a minimum of 300mm wall thickness to be on the safe side. There are cases where cavity walls could be less than 300mm, in those case’s we assess your property on an individual basis.
How to check if your house already has cavity wall insulation
Was your home built in the last 30 years? If so the walls were most likely insulated upon it being built. If your home was not built in the last 30 years, and you want to find out if your cavity walls have been insulated you can check with the building control department in your local council, you can also look for drill holes at regular intervals in your wall (don’t confuse the faint marks left by an injected damp proof course); you can also check your attic as the insulation material may be showing or you can do the following:
- Book an appointment with us now for a free cavity wall survey. One of our authorised surveyors will complete the survey by drilling a small hole into your wall and inserting a small borescope camera inside for a in depth borescope inspection. Once the survey is completed, our Surveyor will fill back in the small hole.
You will receive
- In depth Borescope inspection
- Professional service
- Eligibility Grant Service
My home doesn’t have cavity walls, can I insulate it?
If your house does not have cavity walls, then your walls are solid walls with no cavities to insulate.
Is cavity wall insulation right for my home?
Only consider cavity wall insulation if:
- Your home is made of brick with unfilled cavity walls.
- Your cavities have a minimum of 60mm apart.
- Your brickwork is in good condition.
- All external walls must be accessible. Walls that are joint to a neighbouring house, will need to have inserted into it a cavity barrier.
- Your home is less than 12 metres in height.
- Your walls are not regularly exposed to driving rain.
- Your internal walls must be dry. The reason is having damps walls and then insulating them without treating them first is far worse than no wall insulation at all. Check to see if you have damp patches before booking a Cavity Wall Survey with us. If you find that you have damp patches you’ll need to have that sorted out first before installing your insulation.
- There are no areas of steel or timber-framed construction.
If you can answer yes to all the above cavity wall insulation is suitable for your home.
